As I emigrated to the US as a young teenager I was challenged not only by a language barrier but by feeling as an outsider in a school where many students had grown up together. But, this didn’t stop me from making friends. One summer I was hired at a movie (DVD) rental place near my school where many of the students came during the weekend to rent movies and video games. At that time it was difficult to obtain the popular movies and video games as there weren't any other rental stores nearby and down streaming didn’t exist yet. Can you believe that?? Some of the students would ask me to help them out by reserving a particular movie or video game. I would help them out whenever possible and little by little I made friends. Having that job helped me develop communication skills with the public and build relations with the community. When I look back, I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to build those skills early on. It is important to belong to something, don’t shy away because you are different or because you have an accent. Embrace everybody and the world will reach out.

Hanging out with people that have a good influence on you will make you a better person

When I first joined the car community, I felt completely out of my depth. Surrounded by enthusiasts who seemed to know everything about engines, mechanics, and modifications, I was intimidated. I worried that my lack of knowledge would make me an outsider. But as I attended meetups and workshops, I quickly realized that most people were eager to help rather than judge. They shared tips, offered advice, and celebrated even the smallest progress. I learned that the community thrives on support and collaboration, not competition. This experience taught me that everyone starts somewhere, and the most important part of joining a community is the connections we make and the willingness to learn from each other. Now, I’m not just a member; I’m part of a supportive family that shares my passion for cars.

Something that has helped me a ton while being a student athlete is having a to do list and schedule for everyday. This helps me keep track of the things I need to do so I don’t fall behind. When I first started high school, I would not write anything down. This lead to me having lots of missing assignments and bad grades.

Throughout my experience with high school, making a bunch of new friends and meeting new people makes the high school experience so much fun, but they also help you get through high school from an academic standpoint as friends and classmates that you know are always there for you for support and help. Being part of clubs and school events also make the experience of high school so much fun, as you can meet people with similar interests and going to school dances are some of the best parts of high school and everyone should be able to experience it. To add on, being able to have a good balance of social life, academics, and extracurricular activity makes high school one of the most enjoyable things to experience. Don’t forget you only experience high school once in your lifetime, so make the most of it!

One piece of advice I have is to always keep pushing yourself even when it seems impossible. You will be thanking yourself later for the little bit of extra effort you put in.

As a senior in High school the biggest advice I could give is to not stress yourself out. Things can seem like they matter a lot more than they do especially when it comes to your grades.  Although it is important to try hard in school, I can say as a senior that the relationships I built with people mean a lot more to me then how I did my Freshman year. Have fun and put yourself out there!

In middle school, I struggled to find an environment where I thought I fit in. Transitioning to high school, I found myself stepping out of my comfort zone in many ways such as trying out for the Pep Squad team offered at my school. Beginning cheer shaped me into the person I now am as I learned the significance of perseverance as there are always rough practices and games but, rising above the conflicts allows me to have a better mindset and view on life.
